Zamboangueño-Cebuano singer-songwriter Datu released his new single “Mango Avenue” on Friday, April 10, 2026 — a confessional city pop track blended with funk and soul.
The song is a meditation on memory, identity, and change.
Written in 2019, “Mango Avenue” was born from Datu’s time along the iconic Cebu City street where he attended college. Raised between Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao without a permanent home, it was on Mango Avenue where he found a sense of self amid the chaos of youth.
Mango Avenue — officially General Maxilom Avenue — is one of Cebu City’s most iconic streets, known for its nightlife, student culture, and urban energy. For many Cebuanos, it’s a place of memory, transition, and youthful exploration.
Datu describes himself as a songwriter devoted to the “southern story” — crafting music that feels both intimate and cinematic, finding universal truths in deeply regional experiences.
“Mango Avenue” reflects on love that didn’t fully bloom, the people who shape us even as they leave, and the fleeting nature of the spaces that hold our most defining moments.
The track features Datu’s signature “vocal orchestra” approach — every layer, from deep bass tones to airy harmonies, is shaped entirely by his own voice. The song rises into a whistle note finale, a subtle release that reflects acceptance and the quiet clarity of looking back.
In it, Datu captures what he calls the “expensive ache” of the southern experience — a longing shaped by the people we lose and the streets that remember them.
“This is a song about learning to live with change,” Datu said. “It’s about carrying your past with you, not as a burden, but as something that shapes how you move forward.”
The track was produced by Angelo Neal Salud (Anj), who has worked with SHANNi, Minaw, and others.
“The song has its authentic 80s sound that will surely give you nostalgia,” Anj said.
“Mango Avenue” pairs nostalgic textures with deeply personal storytelling, expanding Datu’s growing catalog that includes his debut “Crowded Places.”
The single is now available on all major streaming platforms.
