Forget everything you know about the “Girl of Steel.” The first trailer for DC Studios’ Supergirl (2026) has officially landed, and it’s clear that James Gunn and director Craig Gillespie (Cruella, I, Tonya) are taking Kara Zor-El in a bold, “hardcore” new direction.
If the teaser tells us anything, it’s that this is less of a traditional superhero movie and more of a gritty space-western epic.
A “Messy” New Hero
Played by House of the Dragon breakout star Milly Alcock, this version of Kara Zor-El isn’t living in Superman’s shadow—she’s carving a path of vengeance across the stars. James Gunn has described this Kara as “much harsher” than her cousin Clark. While Clark was raised by the loving Kents on Earth, Kara spent her first 14 years on a drifting fragment of Krypton, watching everyone she knew perish.
As Gunn put it: “She’s a total mess.” And honestly? That’s why we’re excited.
The Plot: A Mission of Vengeance
Based on the critically acclaimed comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, the film follows Kara on an interstellar journey.
The stakes are personal: her companion Krypto the Superdog has been poisoned by the ruthless Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts). Kara has only three days to find the antidote, leading her to team up with a young alien named Ruthye (Eve Ridley) and cross paths with some of the deadliest figures in the galaxy.
A Star-Studded Galactic Cast
The film isn’t just a solo flight. The cast list is packed with heavy hitters:
- Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl
- Jason Momoa as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo
- Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem
- Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll
- David Krumholtz & Emily Beecham as Kara’s parents, Zor-El and Alura
Why It’s a “Genre-Bender”
Unlike 2025’s Superman, which stayed primarily on Earth, Supergirl takes place entirely in outer space. Director Craig Gillespie is leaning into “space fantasy” vibes, with a score by Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones) that promises to make the cosmic scale feel massive and operatic.
Release Date
Mark your calendars: Supergirl lands in Philippine cinemas on June 24, 2026, and opens in North America on June 26.
