In a major move that signals its ambitious entry into the world of film distribution, Black Bear has announced it will release the Sydney Sweeney boxing drama “Christy” directly into the heart of the awards season calendar, with a nationwide theatrical debut set for November 7. The film, which features a transformative and chameleonic performance from the “Euphoria” star as female boxing icon Christy Martin, was one of the hottest acquisition targets heading into the Toronto Film Festival, where it is set to premiere. However, Black Bear, which financed the picture, has decided to take it off the market entirely, making the biopic the prestigious inaugural release for its fledgling distribution label. This strategic decision underscores the company’s high confidence in the project, with plans already in motion to mount a significant Oscar campaign centered on Sweeney’s performance and the film itself.

Directed by Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner David Michôd of “Animal Kingdom” fame, “Christy” is a moving portrait of resilience and defiance that follows the WBC female super welterweight champ as she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim, played by Ben Foster. The film, co-starring Merritt Wever and Katy O’Brian, explores how while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it, as she confronts issues of family, identity, and a relationship that terrifyingly escalates into a life-or-death situation. Michôd co-wrote the screenplay with Mirrah Foulkes, from an original story by Katherine Fugate, crafting a celebration of persistence, humor, and humanity in the face of life’s unexpected turns. Black Bear President of U.S. Distribution Benjamin Kramer expressed immense excitement, stating, “We’re thrilled about the upcoming release of ‘Christy,’ a moving portrait of resilience and defiance from visionary filmmaker David Michôd. Led by Sydney Sweeney’s masterful transformation into the iconic Christy, capturing a young woman’s fierce determination to define her own destiny, the film is elevated by Michôd’s elegant direction and enriched by an electric supporting turn from Ben Foster.”

This project marks Black Bear’s second collaboration with Sweeney, who previously starred in the studio’s horror film “Immaculate,” and further solidifies the company’s evolution from an active producer and financier of films like “Sing Sing” and “I Care a Lot” into a full-fledged distributor. The company officially launched its distribution arm in July, bringing over Kramer from CAA to run it and hiring long-term Lionsgate distribution executive David Spitz to build out its capabilities. The film was produced by a consortium including Black Bear, Anonymous Content, Votiv, Fifty-Fifty Films, and Yoki, with producers Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman, Votiv’s Brent Stiefel and Justin Lothrop, Michôd, and Sweeney herself at the helm. UTA Independent Film Group and AC Independent co-represented U.S. rights and negotiated the deal with Black Bear on behalf of the filmmaking team, while Black Bear is also handling international rights and will theatrically release the film in the U.K. and Ireland, ensuring this story of fierce determination reaches a global audience.
