Variety exclusively revealed that even Oscar-winning besties have beauty boundaries—as Jennifer Lawrence admitted in Vogue’s new Emma Stone cover story. When Stone decided to fully shave her head for Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming dark comedy Bugonia (a reimagining of 2003’s Save the Green Planet!), Lawrence initially protested: “I really didn’t want her to shave her head,” she confessed. “I had already lived through the Billie Jean King haircut.”
The emotional head-shaving scene—shot in the back of a Range Rover—left Stone in tears beforehand, as it stirred memories of her mother Krista’s breast cancer battle. “She actually did something brave. I’m just shaving my head,” Stone reflected. But the Poor Things star quickly embraced the drastic change, raving about the “amazing” sensation of her first bald shower. Even Lawrence conceded defeat: “Honestly, she looked beautiful. She pulled it off.” Stone’s mother echoed the sentiment, texting her daughter: “I’m so jealous. I want to shave my head again.”
In Bugonia, Stone plays a pharmaceutical CEO kidnapped by conspiracy theorists (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) who believe she’s an alien plotting Earth’s destruction. The role continues Stone’s penchant for transformative challenges under Lanthimos’ direction—a creative partnership that’s already earned her a second Best Actress Oscar earlier this year. Lawrence, who handed Stone the statuette onstage, recalled their post-ceremony bathroom celebration: “I whispered, ‘Two-time best-actress winner,’ and she replied, ‘I feel like that’s bad, though.’”
Set for a Venice Film Festival premiere ahead of its October 24 theatrical release, Bugonia proves Stone’s mantra: “If you’re not pushing yourself to different places, you get stagnant.” And if anyone doubts her commitment? Just ask Lawrence—who’s now a bald-is-beautiful convert.
