Bristol’s rising alt-indie stars Adult Leisure have returned with their shimmering new single ‘The Rules’, out July 25th, the latest preview of their highly anticipated debut album ‘The Things You Don’t Know Yet’ (October 3rd). A euphoric blend of 80s synth nostalgia, driving rhythms, and anguished lyricism, the track cements the quartet’s reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting guitar bands—“bursting forth with glistening 90s guitar figures and a thunderous percussive scamper” (God Is In The TV).
Born from a Dolly Parton-inspired voice note shared in the band’s WhatsApp group, ‘The Rules’ evolved into a modern pop duet with guest vocals from Jess Chivers, capturing both sides of a crumbling relationship. “We wanted to write something from the perspective of two people clinging to love’s last threads,” explains frontman Neil Scott, citing Blossoms’ anthemic warmth as a key influence. Recorded at Humm Studios with Ollie Searle and mastered by John Webber (David Bowie, Duran Duran), the track balances lush guitars and synth-soaked hooks with raw emotional heft—“danceable without losing a resonant emotional core” (Under The Radar).
The single follows May’s ‘See Her’ (featuring The 1975’s saxophonist John Waugh) and earlier album teasers ‘Dancing Don’t Feel Right’ and ‘Borderline’—the latter soundtracking an E4 Made In Chelsea episode, marking the band’s first national TV sync. With support from BBC Radio 6, The Line of Best Fit, and Spotify editorial playlists, Adult Leisure’s momentum is undeniable.
