The Star Trek: Strange New Worlds panel at San Diego Comic-Con delivered one of the franchise’s most delightfully bizarre revelations yet: an entire puppet episode created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop for the upcoming fourth season. Executive producer Akiva Goldsman teased the unexpected installment—which sees Captain Pike and the Enterprise crew transformed into felt creations following a “terrible transporter accident”—while showcasing footage of a puppet Pike sitting solemnly in his captain’s chair.
This latest genre experiment continues Strange New Worlds’ tradition of reinventing itself each week, having previously tackled musicals, horror, fantasy, and even an animated crossover with Lower Decks. Goldsman, who previously told Variety the show could theoretically handle any format (“Could it do Muppets? Sure!”), confirmed the puppetry episode will be directed by Jordan Canning (Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock).
The panel—featuring stars Ethan Peck (Spock), Rebecca Romijn (Una Chin-Riley), and Paul Wesley (Kirk), alongside producers Alex Kurtzman and Henry Alonso Myers—also screened the upcoming period murder mystery episode “A Space Adventure Hour” for Hall H attendees. Goldsman addressed the recent announcement that the series will conclude with Season 5, revealing their plan to bridge directly into Kirk’s first day commanding the Enterprise—while cheekily urging fans to lobby Paramount/Skydance for a “Star Trek: Year One” continuation set during the original series era.
With production on Season 4 now complete, the puppet episode stands as perhaps the boldest swing yet for a show that’s made risk-taking its trademark. As Goldsman put it: When your series has already done musical numbers and cartoon crossovers, why not let Starfleet go full Muppet?
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds streams on Paramount+. Season 4 premieres in 2026.
