The future of Star Trek took center stage at San Diego Comic-Con as Star Trek: Starfleet Academy debuted its first trailer, introducing a fresh generation of cadets—and a surprising new villain—in a series that aims to recapture Gene Roddenberry’s vision of hope amid modern-day challenges. Set in the 32nd century, following the events of Star Trek: Discovery, the show follows the relaunch of Starfleet Academy on Earth after the Federation’s 120-year absence.
Executive producer Alex Kurtzman framed the series as a response to today’s fractured world: “We look at the generation now that is inheriting all of this division and all these major issues. We wanted to create a show that anchors us back to Roddenberry’s essential vision of hope. How do you find it, how do you rebuild it?”
The teaser opens with Oscar-winner Holly Hunter as Chancellor Nahla Ake, captain of the USS Athena, welcoming cadets to the Academy. Hunter described the duality of her role: “The captain is there to analyze in emergency situations and delegate. The chancellor is there to guide, collaborate, and have tremendous empathy. It was a wonderful combination.” The trailer culminates in a chilling reveal of Paul Giamatti as the season’s antagonist, Nus Braka—a part-Klingon, part-Tellarite warlord with ties to one of the cadets.
The series introduces a diverse ensemble of cadets, each bringing unique struggles to Starfleet’s hallowed halls:
- Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), an orphan with a troubled past, reluctantly joins the Academy while searching for his mother. Rosta teased, “You’re entering Starfleet through the eyes of an outsider.”
- Jay-Den Kraag (Karim Diané), a Klingon aspiring to be a medic, endured five-hour prosthetic sessions—later streamlined to two—and sought advice from Trek veterans Michael Dorn and Doug Jones.
- Sam (Kerrice Brooks), a Kasqian (a sentient hologram), is a wide-eyed newcomer who, as Brooks emotionally shared, “brings no baggage, just freshness and levity.”
- Darem Reymi (George Hawkins), a privileged cadet from a wealthy world, struggles with ego and competition.
- Genesis Lythe (Bella Shepard), an admiral’s daughter and member of the new Dar-Sha species, fights to carve her own legacy.
Rounding out the cast are Betazoid diplomat’s daughter Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner) and Commander Lura Thok (Gina Yashere), a fierce Klingon-Jem’Hadar hybrid. Familiar faces also return, including Robert Picardo as Voyager’s holographic Doctor, Tig Notaro as Discovery’s Jett Reno, and Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance.
With its focus on youth, identity, and rebuilding a fractured future, Starfleet Academy aims to be both a nostalgic callback and a bold step forward. As the trailer faded to black with Giamatti’s ominous presence lingering, one thing became clear: the Star Trek universe is ready to inspire—and challenge—a new generation.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy premieres in early 2026.
