Variety can exclusively reveal that visionary director Shekhar Kapur is pushing the boundaries of storytelling with Warlord, a revolutionary sci-fi series crafted entirely using artificial intelligence. The first teaser for the project has just been unveiled, with the full debut episode expected within the next two to three months.
Known for his genre-defying work—from the Oscar-winning Elizabeth to Bollywood classics like Mr. India—Kapur now ventures into uncharted creative territory with a narrative that blends interdimensional warfare, self-healing organic spaceships, and a radical open-source approach to worldbuilding.
At the heart of Warlord lies a cosmic love story: an indestructible warrior whose survival hinges on his lover in another dimension, who can only pull him to safety at the brink of death. “You might see a sword go through him, but he’s not there,” Kapur explains, describing the high-stakes mechanics of his protagonist’s existence. The series expands into a sprawling galactic conflict over mystical crystals—particles so fleeting they exist for mere fractions of a second yet hold the power to shape the universe.
Partnering with generative AI studio Blo, Kapur has reimagined production itself, with sequences that once took months now completed in weeks. Spaceships resemble living jellyfish, propelled not by engines but by “the winds of the universe,” while the narrative’s aesthetic and characters will be released as a shared creative commons, inviting others to adapt and expand the world for a nominal fee.
“Great stories can become their own platforms,” Kapur declares, framing Warlord as both a narrative and a philosophical challenge to traditional studio models. He likens AI’s disruptive potential to Napster’s impact on music, predicting a collapse of budget-driven filmmaking in favor of democratized creation. This ethos extends to his plans for a Dharavi-based film school focused on AI, as well as the series’ planned expansion into films and games.
Even as Kapur develops two live-action features—Ebony McQueen and Masoom… The New Generation—Kapur sees Warlord as a seed for a “rainforest of ideas,” where organic, self-sustaining storytelling flourishes beyond corporate control. With composer Kartik Shah and Studio Blo’s tech innovators alongside him, Kapur isn’t just directing a series; he’s igniting a rebellion—one where imagination, not infrastructure, holds ultimate power.
