Variety has learned that Nicola Coughlan, the breakout star of Derry Girls and Bridgerton, is set to headline the fourth season of Channel 4’s critically acclaimed anthology series I Am. The BAFTA-winning drama, known for its raw, female-led storytelling, will feature Coughlan in I Am Helen, a two-part installment alongside Joe Cole (Gangs of London, A Small Light). Since its 2019 debut, the series has attracted powerhouse talent, including Kate Winslet, Letitia Wright, Lesley Manville, and Samantha Morton, with Winslet’s I Am Ruth securing dual BAFTAs in 2023.

Created, written, and directed by BAFTA winner Dominic Savage, I Am is produced by Emmy-winning Me+You Productions, with Savage developing each story in close collaboration with its lead actors. For I Am Helen, Coughlan worked alongside Savage to shape the narrative, continuing the show’s tradition of intimate, provocative storytelling. “It’s an absolute honour to be part of telling the next I Am… story alongside Dominic Savage—a singular talent deeply committed to exploring the breadth of the female experience,” Coughlan said. “To follow in the footsteps of the brilliant women who’ve collaborated with him feels surreal, and I’m incredibly fortunate to embark on this journey.”

The series has been a ratings and awards magnet for Channel 4, with its first season becoming the network’s most successful new 10pm drama in six years. Vicky McClure (I Am Nicola), Samantha Morton (I Am Kirsty), and Gemma Chan (I Am Hannah) anchored the debut run, while Suranne Jones (I Am Victoria), Letitia Wright (I Am Danielle), and Lesley Manville (I Am Maria) propelled the second season to similar acclaim. Krishnendu Majumdar and Richard Yee of Me+You Productions praised the new chapter, calling Savage “one of the most brilliant and uniquely talented filmmakers today” and Coughlan “one of the standout performers of her generation.”

Channel 4’s commissioning editor for drama, Gemma Boswell, echoed the enthusiasm, stating, “We are delighted to welcome back Dominic Savage alongside the supremely talented Nicola Coughlan. I Am is a powerful and timely portrait of our times, and this collaboration promises a distinctive, impactful story.” Produced by Me+You with co-funding from Sky Studios, I Am Helen continues the anthology’s legacy of emotionally charged narratives, with NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution handling international sales. As Coughlan steps into this prestigious role, expectations are high for another gripping addition to the celebrated series.
