The iconic slasher franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer is back with a vengeance, introducing a fresh group of friends whose lives unravel after a deadly secret binds them together. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, this continuation of the 1997 horror classic promises the same razor-sharp tension with a new cast that brings electrifying chemistry to the screen. “It was like lightning in a bottle,” Robinson says of the ensemble. “The connection between these actors leaps off the screen, making the horror feel even more visceral.”
Leading the pack is Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid, Doctor Who) as Milo Griffin, the groupโs voice of reasonโa young man burdened by guilt over the accident that sets the nightmare in motion. “Milo is practical and rational, the one trying to ground everyone when things spiral,” Hauer-King explains. “But heโs also wrestling with the moral weight of what theyโve done.” For the actor, stepping into the horror genre was a thrilling experience. “Thereโs fear, mystery, bloodโall the slasher staples done brilliantly,” he says. “But whatโs really exciting is the fresh humor woven into the terror. The writers nailed that balance where horror and comedy play off each other in a way that feels contemporary and fun.”
Opposite Milo is Chase Sui Wonders as Ava Brucks, his high school sweetheartโa character as perceptive as she is volatile. “Ava doesnโt want to be complicit in what happened at Reaperโs Curve, but the group pressures her into silence,” Wonders reveals. “That moment fractures them in ways that canโt be undone.” Avaโs closest confidante, Danica Richards, is played by Danica Cline, who describes their bond as unshakable. “Danica and Ava have been best friends forever,” Cline says. “No matter how dark things get, that loyalty doesnโt break.”
Rounding out the doomed friend group is Tyriq Withers as Teddy Spencer, Southportโs golden boy and heir to a real estate empire. “Teddyโs privilege is a double-edged sword,” Withers explains. “Heโs the groupโs comic relief, always trying to keep spirits up, but beneath that charm is real trauma from a family that never truly supported him.” Then thereโs Sarah Pidgeonโs Stevie, a young woman who thought sheโd escaped their small townโonly to be pulled back in. “Stevieโs the realist of the group,” Pidgeon says. “Sheโs suffered every time lifeโs gone sideways, unlike Danica, whoโs skated by. That tension between them adds another layer to the horror.”
Adding to the legacy factor is Freddie Prinze Jr., reprising his role as Ray Bronson, a survivor of the original massacre who now owns the local bar where Stevie works. His presence bridges the past and present, deepening the lore of Southportโs bloody history.
With its mix of fresh faces, sharp writing, and the return of a horror legend, I Know What You Did Last Summer is poised to carve its own place in slasher history. As Hauer-King puts it, “This isnโt just a rehashโitโs a new chapter with characters youโll actually root for, right before theyโre picked off one by one.”
