In a move that signals a seismic shift in the music business landscape, former Spotify global head of music Jeremy Erlich has officially unveiled Alta Music Group, a new full-service independent music company encompassing recording, publishing, and artist management. Headquartered in Los Angeles, the venture has already secured powerhouse partnerships with The Orchard for distribution and THEBLACKLABEL—the production company founded by K-pop hitmaker Teddy Park—for joint artist development and promotion.
The announcement comes with a star-studded debut: Alta’s management division, in collaboration with Jennie’s OddAtelier, has signed Blackpink’s Jennie as its flagship artist. This strategic partnership builds on Erlich’s existing relationship with the global superstar, having played a pivotal role in Blackpink’s historic Interscope deal during his tenure at Spotify. Jennie’s recent solo debut “Ruby” shattered records, and her alignment with Alta signals a new chapter in her career as both an artist and entrepreneur.
“Throughout my career, I’ve focused on creating environments where artists can thrive globally for the long term,” Erlich stated. “Alta is built to do exactly that—a world-class team dedicated entirely to our artists and their music. Nothing else matters.” His vision is backed by an all-star executive roster, including Nima Khalilian (ex-Stem, Interscope), Parker Ulry (Interscope, Warner), and Michael Seltzer (Universal Music Group), among others.
Khalilian, a key architect of Alta’s strategy, emphasized the company’s mission: “This is about putting artists first in an industry that never stops changing. We’re here to cut through the noise with clarity and purpose.”
Erlich’s resume reads like a blueprint for modern music success. After eight years at Universal Music Group and Interscope Geffen A&M, he spent nearly six years at Spotify, first as VP of Music Strategy before ascending to Global Head of Music, where he shaped the platform’s artist-centric initiatives and landmark deals. His departure from Spotify earlier this year sparked industry speculation, now answered with Alta’s ambitious launch.
The company’s dual focus—combining THEBLACKLABEL’s hitmaking prowess with The Orchard’s global distribution muscle—positions Alta as a unique hybrid: part creative incubator, part commercial powerhouse. With Jennie onboard and more signings expected soon, Alta is poised to redefine what an independent music company can achieve in the streaming era.
As the industry watches closely, one thing is clear: Jeremy Erlich isn’t just starting a new company—he’s building a new model.
