The hook is back. Original I Know What You Did Last Summer stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprise their iconic roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson in the chilling new chapter of the seminal 1997 slasher franchise, arriving in Philippine cinemas July 30.
Returning to the Nightmare
Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) helms the legacy sequel that bridges generations of terror. “Working with Freddie and Jen was amazing,” Robinson reveals. “It was important to me to make sure that both of their stories felt like a continuation. We wanted to know, how would something like this affect them 27 years later? Who would they become, and how will that inform how they advise and help this younger group?”

The film follows five friends who cover up a fatal accident, only to be hunted by a masked killer connected to Julie and Ray’s 1997 trauma. When the new targets uncover clues about the original massacre, they seek help from the only people who survived the Fisherman’s wrath.

Legacy of Terror
Love Hewitt, whose character Julie now works as a psychology professor, praised Robinson’s reverence for the source material: “Jenn is truly passionate about I Know What You Did Last Summer, and I found that to be so helpful. She loves Julie and Ray, the story, and even the Fisherman. All that love has gone into this new version, and you can see it and you can feel it.”
The actress reflects on Julie’s evolution: “She retains all the gumption and moxie she learned over those earlier stories, and now brings all that with her.”
A Horror Fan’s Perspective
Prinze Jr., a self-professed horror aficionado, was equally impressed with Robinson’s vision: “Jenn wasn’t going to throw away the past. She treats it with the respect it deserves, while also demonstrating what makes her such an innovative writer and director.”
The actor draws parallels to Robinson’s previous work: “In Jenn’s 2022 film Do Revenge, you could see the sort of sexiness that she would bring to I Know What You Did Last Summer. As a horror fan, I think horror movies are, in a unique way, rather beautiful.”
New Nightmares, Familiar Faces
The sequel finds Julie and Ray – now divorced but still connected by trauma – reluctantly reuniting when history repeats itself. Prinze Jr.’s Ray owns a bar, while Love Hewitt’s Julie uses her academic background to counsel the new victims. Together, they must confront the past to stop another bloodbath.
I Know What You Did Last Summer makes its deadly return to Philippine cinemas on July 30.
