Moviegoers will get their first glimpse of Pandora’s next chapter this weekend—but only with a ticket to Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Disney and 20th Century Studios announced via the official “Avatar” X account that the highly anticipated first trailer for James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” will screen exclusively in theaters ahead of “Fantastic Four” showings.
This strategic rollout offers a major incentive for fans ahead of “Fire and Ash’s” December 19 theatrical release. The threequel is the first of three planned sequels, with “Avatar 4” slated for December 21, 2029, and “Avatar 5” following on December 19, 2031. The trailer, initially unveiled at CinemaCon in April, plunges audiences back into Pandora’s visually stunning ecosystem while introducing two warring Na’vi tribes: the sky-faring Wind Traders, navigating via intricate hot-air balloon-like vessels, and their aerial adversaries, the Fire People, mounted on fearsome flying beasts. A dramatic clash culminates in a Na’vi warrior struck down by a flaming arrow, underscoring the escalating conflict.
The footage also reveals the emotional stakes for returning heroes Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). “We can not live like this, baby,” Jake implores his wife. “We can not live with this hate.” “Fire and Ash” continues directly after “The Way of Water,” with Jake’s family now facing the “Ash People”—a faction of Na’vi who have rejected Eywa’s teachings and allied with humanity’s oppressive Resources Development Administration (RDA).
The exclusive theatrical trailer debut leverages the massive audience draw of “Fantastic Four” to reignite excitement for Cameron’s franchise, aiming to replicate the unprecedented success of the first two films. Both “Avatar” (2009) and “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022) soared past the $2 billion mark globally, currently holding the top and third spots on the all-time worldwide box office chart. Should “Fire and Ash” achieve similar results, the “Avatar” saga will stand alone as the only franchise with three films crossing the $2 billion threshold.
