At the London premiere of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Julia Garner responded with characteristic poise to the initial fan debates surrounding her casting as Silver Surfer—a role traditionally associated with the male character Norrin Radd in Marvel Comics.

“I said, ‘I’m just going to still do my job,’” the Emmy-winning Ozark star told the BBC, shrugging off early criticism. She clarified that her version draws from Shalla-Bal, a female cosmic entity introduced in Marvel’s 1968 comics who shares the Surfer’s abilities. “It’s different,” Garner emphasized, noting the overwhelmingly positive response to the character’s trailer debut. “I was happy people resonated with it. I’m just grateful to be at this dance.”

Director Matt Shakman (WandaVision) and Marvel Studios have positioned this iteration as a fresh take that honors the source material’s spirit while expanding its mythology. Garner joins Pedro Pascal (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman), and Ralph Ineson (Galactus) in the 1960s-set film, which promises practical effects for the Surfer’s signature chrome aesthetic.

The casting controversy mirrors past Marvel debates, but Garner’s track record of transformative performances—from The Inventor to The Wolf Man—suggests her Surfer will silence skeptics. As she put it: “I focus on the work, not the noise.”

The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters July 25, 2025.
