Hulu’s highly anticipated King of the Hill revival has tapped The Daily Show correspondent and Crazy Rich Asians star Ronny Chieng to voice fan-favorite neighbor Kahn Souphanousinphone, replacing original actor Toby Huss for the show’s 14th season premiering August 4. The announcement came alongside the release of an official trailer revealing the Hill family’s return to a transformed Arlen, Texas.

Chieng takes over the role of the competitive Laotian-American neighbor from Huss, who now voices Dale Gribble starting Episode 7—a recasting necessitated by the 2023 passing of Johnny Hardwick. The comedian accidentally revealed his involvement last December during a podcast recording but maintained secrecy until Hulu’s official confirmation.

“Kahn remains that brilliantly flawed character—proud, controlling, and perpetually measuring himself against Hank,” said executive producer Saladin Patterson. “Ronny brings fresh energy while honoring what made the character iconic.” Lauren Tom continues voicing Kahn’s wife Minh and daughter Connie in the revival.

The 10-episode season picks up with Hank and Peggy returning from Saudi Arabia, where they worked to fund retirement, only to find Arlen changed. Their now-adult son Bobby (still voiced by Pamela Adlon) pursues a chef career in Dallas alongside former classmates. Original cast members Mike Judge (Hank), Kathy Najimy (Peggy), and Stephen Root (Bill) all reprise their roles.

Chieng joins amid a career surge following his NYT-ranked 2024 Netflix special Love to Hate It and roles in Shang-Chi and M3GAN. His casting continues the revival’s balance of preserving legacy while evolving the show—a challenge showrunner Patterson (The Wonder Years reboot) navigates with original creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels.

Industry analysts note the revival’s 1990s-2000s nostalgia factor could draw strong streaming numbers, particularly among millennials who grew up with the series. The trailer hints at contemporary updates—including smartphone culture and shifting Texas demographics—while retaining the show’s signature dry humor.

King of the Hill Season 14 premieres August 4 on Hulu with all episodes dropping weekly.
