Stepping into the iconic red cape for James Gunn’s Superman (out July 11), David Corenswet sought guidance from the two actors who most recently embodied the Man of Steel—Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) and Tyler Hoechlin (Superman & Lois). But in a twist befitting the superhero’s ethos, both predecessors politely declined to offer pointers. “Both of them, interestingly, sort of said in their own words, ‘I’m not gonna try and give you any tips,’” Corenswet revealed at the film’s London premiere. “And I think that’s a very Superman thing. Superman’s not so much for giving advice or dictating how other people should be.”
Instead, Cavill and Hoechlin offered something more in line with the character’s spirit: encouragement. “They really just conveyed to me a sense of ‘have fun with it,’” Corenswet said, noting he hopes to share the screen with them someday. The lack of hand-holding aligns with Gunn’s vision for his DC Universe reboot—a fresh start unburdened by past iterations. Corenswet’s Clark Kent is younger (25) and more emotionally expressive than Cavill’s brooding take, drawing inspiration from Christopher Reeve’s physicality and Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman comics.
The film’s stacked cast includes Rachel Brosnahan as a fiercely intelligent Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as a Steve Jobs-inspired Lex Luthor, and Isabela Merced as a battle-hardened Hawkgirl. Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, complete with comic-accurate bowl cut, leads the Justice Gang—a team of heroes that subtly plants seeds for DC’s future.
Gunn, meanwhile, is already eyeing another DC icon: Wonder Woman. When asked about potential candidates for the role, he name-dropped Hit Man star Adria Arjona—though he clarified his Instagram follow wasn’t confirmation. “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way,” he teased, hinting that a script is “being written right now.”
For now, the spotlight belongs to Corenswet, who—like his Superman—is learning to trust his own instincts. “They were very encouraging,” he said of Cavill and Hoechlin. “It’ll be great when we can all get in a room together.” Until then, the DCU’s future rests on his shoulders.
