How ‘Sinners’ Secretly Borrowed From Marvel’s Troubled ‘Blade’ Reboot2 min read

In an unexpected twist of Hollywood fate, Ryan Coogler’s vampire thriller Sinners (2025) contains a hidden Marvel connection that even the most eagle-eyed fans might have missed. During a recent interview with ScreenCrush, producer Sev Ohanian revealed that the film’s period-accurate costumes were originally created for Marvel’s long-delayed Blade reboot—before that production stalled indefinitely.

A Warehouse Full of Unused Vampire Fashion

Ohanian explained that legendary costume designer Ruth Carter—who had been working on Blade—had already assembled a trove of 19th-century garments for the Marvel film, which was initially set to explore the vampire hunter’s past. When Sinners entered production with a tight schedule, Carter’s unused Blade wardrobe became an unexpected lifeline.

“She happened to have a warehouse full of period-appropriate clothes, and it was like, ‘Yo, we got to shoot this movie like tomorrow,’” Ohanian recalled. “Marvel was generous enough and kind enough to let us basically purchase it at price.”

While lead actors Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku, and Jayme Lawson wore original designs, many of the background actors in Sinners were dressed in pieces originally meant for Blade. The revelation adds a fascinating layer to Sinners’ production, positioning it as an unofficial cousin to the stalled Marvel project.

A Box Office Vampire That Defied Expectations

The thrifty costume solution proved prophetic for Sinners, which became one of 2025’s most surprising hits. The original horror film—released in a marketplace dominated by franchises—grossed a staggering $364 million worldwide, making it the eighth highest-grossing film of the year and the only non-IP title in the top 10. Its success highlights audiences’ hunger for fresh storytelling, even as studios remain risk-averse.

Meanwhile, ‘Blade’ Remains in Limbo

Marvel’s Blade, first announced in 2019 with Mahershala Ali attached as the iconic daywalker, has faced repeated delays, director changes, and script overhauls. Ali recently reaffirmed his commitment to the role at the Jurassic World Rebirth premiere, telling Variety, “Call Marvel. I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready.”

Yet while Blade struggles to get off the ground, its unused costumes have already made their mark—on a completely different vampire story. The irony isn’t lost on fans: a film about a hunter of the undead has itself been stuck in development purgatory, while its discarded wardrobe helped fuel a box office phenomenon.

A Hollywood Happy Accident

The Sinners/Blade crossover is a testament to the unpredictable nature of filmmaking—where one project’s setbacks can become another’s salvation. For now, Blade’s future remains uncertain, but its aesthetic legacy lives on in Sinners’ gritty, period-perfect visuals. And if Ali finally gets his call to action, perhaps Marvel will take notes from Sinners’ success: sometimes, the best way to move forward is to embrace the past.
