At just 19 years old, Japanese singer-songwriter Rol3ert (pronounced “Robert”) is rapidly solidifying his status as a compelling new voice. Following the resonant success of his debut single “meaning” in January and April’s “HOPE,” both embraced by listeners across Asia and featured on major streaming playlists, Rol3ert unveils his most intimate offering yet: “Nerd.” Released globally on June 25th under Exciter Records, the track arrives as a tender, hopeful embrace for anyone who’s ever felt alone.

“Nerd” transcends a simple pop song; it’s a heartfelt conversation. Born from a moment of inspiration during a bike ride, the track masterfully blends emotional vulnerability with melodic clarity. Primarily written in English, its power crescendos in a piercing Japanese verse: “I erased my colors / And I was okay with that / But I was still scared of the end.” This raw admission gives way to a quiet, affirming chorus that reads like a direct message to Rol3ert’s younger self – and to every listener navigating uncertainty: “Don’t die / Don’t throw it away / Believe in the feelings inside you / Live honestly / Trust in your emotions.”* It’s a tribute to the “beautiful nerds” holding onto hope for the future.

Co-produced by the acclaimed MONJOE (yahyel, DATS, Number_i), “Nerd” wraps Rol3ert’s signature sparkling-yet-shadowy indie pop/rock sound in a dreamlike groove. The track’s immersive depth is further elevated by mixing and mastering engineer Masahito Komori (Fujii Kaze, Kenshi Yonezu, Official HIGE DANDism), ensuring every nuanced emotion resonates.

The official music video beautifully visualizes the song’s core. It portrays the story of a “nerdy” boy lost in his world, who forms an unexpected, quiet connection with a girl (played with soft mystery by actress Aika Sonoda). Their awkward, sincere “not-quite-dancing” moments poignantly contrast the song’s emotional intensity, capturing the fragile beauty of finding understanding.

In deeply personal liner notes, Rol3ert reflects on the song’s genesis: “Even though I’ve lived for 19 years… there are still moments when I wonder what the right answer in life really is. That feeling of being totally alone… I think everyone experiences it… The more you chase answers, the more you can lose sight of yourself. That’s why I believe in facing the ‘nerdy’ parts of yourself… I’ve put that hope and that version of myself into this song.”

“Nerd” isn’t just a release; it’s the heart of Rol3ert’s burgeoning live presence. His first solo show, “3mpty”, happens on July 4th at Daikanyama SPACE ODD in Tokyo, promising an intimate journey through the narratives of “meaning”, “HOPE”, and “Nerd”. The momentum surges onto a major stage on July 27th, as Rol3ert makes his FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL debut on the Pyramid Garden stage. Accompanied by Colombian bassist/manipulator Alex and guitarist Kenshin Sugimura, his evocative sound is set to meet the iconic natural atmosphere of Naeba, marking a significant milestone in his ascent.
