The global webtoon phenomenon that captivated over 2.6 billion readers is finally getting the royal treatment. Disney+ has officially announced production on The Remarried Empress, a live-action adaptation of the hit Korean romance fantasy that redefines the term “divorce revenge” with imperial flair.

A Story Fit for Streaming Royalty

At its heart, The Remarried Empress is a tale of betrayal, rebirth, and regal revenge. The series follows Empress Navier (played by Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha‘s Shin Min-a), the epitome of grace and intelligence, whose world shatters when her husband, Emperor Sovieshu (Ju Ji-hyun of Along With the Gods fame), returns from war with a mistress in tow—Rashta (Lee Se-young), a former runaway slave with ambitions far beyond the emperor’s bedchamber.

But Navier is no damsel in distress. When Sovieshu demands a divorce, she turns the tables by accepting—on the condition that she marries Prince Heinrey (Lee Jong-suk), the enigmatic heir to a rival kingdom. What follows is a chess game of political maneuvering, romantic tension, and a fight for sovereignty that will leave viewers breathless.

A Dream Team Behind the Camera

Disney+ has assembled a powerhouse creative team to bring this webtoon to life. The series will be adapted by Yeoh Geena and Hyun Choong-yeol, the minds behind Netflix’s The Uncanny Counter, ensuring a blend of sharp storytelling and fantastical world-building. At the helm is director Cho Su-won (Still 17, Pinocchio), known for her ability to balance emotional depth with sweeping drama.

Disney+ Doubles Down on Korean Content

The Remarried Empress is the latest jewel in Disney+’s expanding Korean content crown. The streamer has been aggressively investing in K-dramas, from the recently renewed A Shop for Killers to upcoming thrillers like Nine Puzzles (starring Kim Da-mi) and Tempest, a geopolitical conspiracy drama featuring Jun Ji-hyun and John Cho.

With its mix of palace intrigue, slow-burn romance, and a heroine who refuses to be dethroned, The Remarried Empress is poised to become Disney+’s next global obsession.

Will you be watching? Or are you already team Heinrey vs. team Sovieshu?
