Jakarta-based multi-instrumentalist Yana Setya N., known for his punk project Gracehowl and bass work with Saturday Night Karaoke, unveils a profound artistic evolution with his latest release as renaivé—the conceptually rich Ethereal Recurrence EP. Dropping June 16, 2025, this five-track instrumental work blends math-rock intricacy with petalcore/botanica textures to musically map the human experience from birth to rebirth.

A Departure From Random Experimentation

Following his genre-hopping trilogy (i, ii, iii), Yana shifts to deliberate storytelling with Ethereal Recurrence, his first fully conceptual EP. The two-year creative process marked new collaborations:

  • Recording technicians refined the glitchy yet ethereal guitar work
  • Visual artists crafted accompanying botanical-themed artwork
  • Close peers provided creative feedback—a first for his solo projects

“This is my first serious instrumental math-rock exploration,” Yana notes. “Inviting collaborators pushed me beyond my DIY comfort zone.”

Nietzschean Philosophy Meets Math-Rock

The EP’s title reimagines Nietzsche’s “Eternal Recurrence” concept through a hopeful lens. Each track mirrors life’s cyclical nature:

  1. “Constellate” – Birth’s chaotic beauty (twinkling harmonics, irregular time signatures)
  2. “Ardor” – Youth’s fiery passion (driving rhythms, crescendoing melodies)
  3. “Slight Breeze (The Aftermath)” – Existential reflection (ambient pauses between frenetic phrases)
  4. “7-Minute Candle” – Mortality’s fleeting glow (decaying arpeggios)
  5. “…and gratitude unfolds by itself” – Rebirth’s quiet joy (resolution in major-key motifs)

“The music feels uplifting, but the theme sits in contemplation,” Yana explains. “It’s about finding meaning in life’s repetitions.”

Why This Release Stands Out

  • Genre Fusion: Math-rock’s precision softened by petalcore’s organic warmth
  • Narrative Depth: An instrumental album that feels autobiographical
  • Collaborative Growth: Retains renaivé’s signature style while embracing new inputs

About renaivé
Once a punk solo act (Gracehowl) and content creator, Yana’s renaivé project now bridges technical musicianship with philosophical storytelling—proving instrumental music can resonate as deeply as lyrical works. For fans of Toe, Covet, and botanical ambient sounds, this EP offers both cerebral stimulation and emotional catharsis.

“It’s self-reflection made audible,” Yana says. And with Ethereal Recurrence, listeners are invited to reflect alongside him.
