The internet’s favorite eccentric musical artist PIKOTARO has made his triumphant return with “CHANCHANKO KANREKI60,” a wildly imaginative new single and music video that blends Japanese cultural traditions with cutting-edge AI technology. Released on June 8, the track was created for NHK’s beloved music program “Minna no Uta” and delivers PIKOTARO’s signature brand of absurdist humor through a visually stunning, AI-generated experience.

Directed by PIKOTARO’s creator Kosaka Daimaou in collaboration with AI video creators, the music video takes viewers on a surreal journey featuring the artist flying through the sky, transforming into a giant Godzilla-sized version of himself, and leading a massive crowd of 50,000 people wearing traditional red chanchanko vests in an exuberant dance. These bizarre yet captivating visuals celebrate kanreki, the significant Japanese milestone marking one’s 60th birthday – traditionally viewed as the completion of the zodiac cycle and beginning of a new life stage.

In Japanese culture, kanreki celebrations often involve wearing a red chanchanko (a sleeveless padded vest) as symbolic of returning to infancy and being spiritually reborn. PIKOTARO puts his unique spin on this meaningful tradition, combining respect for cultural heritage with his trademark playful spirit and technological innovation.

“The new MV for Minna no Uta is finally done – Piko!” PIKOTARO exclaimed in his characteristic style. “Kosaka Daimaou did most of the heavy lifting – he’s a strong one! We’ve never used AI this much in a video before, Piko!? Let’s celebrate all the 60-year-olds in our lives – with humans, machines, the world, and our families – Pi!!”

This project represents a significant evolution for the artist who first gained global fame in 2016 with his viral sensation “PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen).” That breakout hit earned him a Guinness World Record as the shortest song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and made him the first Japanese artist in 26 years to enter the U.S. charts. Since then, PIKOTARO has become something of a cultural ambassador, even performing at state functions including a banquet during former President Trump’s visit to Japan.

“CHANCHANKO KANREKI60” will air on NHK’s “Minna no Uta” program throughout June and July, introducing PIKOTARO’s unique musical comedy to new audiences while delighting his existing fanbase. The single is now available for streaming worldwide, offering viewers everywhere the chance to experience this joyful celebration of life’s milestones through PIKOTARO’s wonderfully weird lens.
