Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes takes on a haunting new role as the eccentric Dr. Ian Kelson in the highly anticipated horror sequel “28 Years Later,” coming to Philippine cinemas on June 18. The film returns to the virus-ravaged world first introduced in Danny Boyle’s 2002 classic “28 Days Later,” with Fiennes portraying one of the few survivors in a devastated United Kingdom.

Fiennes describes his character as “above all, a survivor” who lives by the mantra “memento mori” – remember death. “He’s accepted the fact of death – that it’s so present,” Fiennes explains about his character. “Rather than run away from it, pretend death doesn’t exist, or live in fear of it, Kelson is honoring death and the dead. In a way, he’s a rather clergy-like figure and a humanist.”

The film’s setting finds a group of survivors living on a protected island haven, secured by a single defended causeway that floods daily, keeping the infected at bay. Dr. Kelson emerges as one of the most visually striking characters in this post-apocalyptic world, thanks to Fiennes’ collaboration with production designer Carson McColl, costume designer Gareth Pugh, and makeup supervisor Flora Moody.

Fiennes worked closely with the creative team to develop Kelson’s unforgettable appearance. “One of Kelson’s defining traits is that he covers himself in iodine, which is a prophylactic against the rage virus,” Fiennes reveals. “So, Kelson is covered in reddish-orange iodine, and then we made the decision to have his head shaven, which we thought was a strong look.”

Makeup supervisor Moody completed the character’s unsettling transformation by considering how people might appear without access to basic hygiene products. “Flora considered what do people look like if they no longer have access to shampoo and makeup,” Fiennes notes. The team aimed to create a figure that would be both “arresting and startling” to other survivors when they first encounter him.

The film marks a return to the terrifying universe where the rage virus first emerged in “28 Days Later,” with this new installment exploring how society has changed nearly three decades after the initial outbreak. Fiennes joins a cast that includes both new faces and returning characters from the original films.

Audiences can get their first proper look at Fiennes’ transformed character in the newly released trailer, which showcases the film’s tense atmosphere and the survivors’ desperate struggle in this brutal new world. The trailer hints at Kelson’s pivotal role in the story as someone who has found an unusual way to coexist with the constant threat of the virus.

“28 Years Later” promises to deliver the same intense, visceral horror that made the original film a landmark in the zombie genre, while expanding the mythology and exploring new psychological dimensions of survival. Fiennes’ performance as the iodine-covered, shaven-headed Dr. Kelson appears set to be one of the film’s most memorable elements.

The film will be distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, the local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Horror fans can prepare for the film’s June 18 release by watching the chilling new trailer and following the official social media channels using the hashtag #28YearsLater.

With its combination of Fiennes’ compelling performance, striking visual design, and the return to one of horror’s most frightening fictional worlds, “28 Years Later” is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated genre films of the summer. Moviegoers can experience the terror when the film arrives in cinemas next month.
