Martin Scorsese couldn’t resist offering feedback—even when he was the one in front of the camera for Apple TV+’s The Studio.
In a recent interview with People, series co-creators Evan Goldberg and Alex Gregory shared behind-the-scenes details about working with the legendary director on his cameo appearance in the show’s pilot episode. While Scorsese played himself in a scene opposite Charlize Theron, he noticed something was “wrong” with the take—but chose not to speak up until after filming wrapped.
“There was a moment where he and Charlize were whispering to each other, and it took about 10 takes to get the shot,” Goldberg, who directed the episode, recalled. “When we finally got it, I asked, ‘What were you whispering about?’ He said, ‘I knew you were doing this wrong, but I didn’t want to be a backseat director, so I just didn’t say anything.’ I told him, ‘Well, we could have used that time, but I appreciate that you didn’t want to manhandle us.’“
Gregory added that the entire crew was stunned to have Scorsese on set, joking that they kept expecting him to cancel. Goldberg praised the Oscar winner’s unexpected acting chops, saying, “Unanimously, we would say Martin Scorsese as an actor was unbelievable. The fact that he actually showed up—because we kept thinking, ‘He’s gonna cancel. It’s too amazing. It’s too special.’ He’s just the best.”
The Studio, which premiered March 26 on Apple TV+, stars Seth Rogen as Matt Remick, a newly appointed studio head struggling to balance artistic integrity with Hollywood’s cutthroat business demands. Scorsese’s cameo marks one of the show’s many high-profile appearances, blending Hollywood satire with insider authenticity.
Even when he’s not behind the camera, it seems Scorsese just can’t help but direct—even if only in whispers.
