From “Bewitched” to a Surreal Masquerade, the GRAMMY Winner Enchants Once More.
“Otherworldly artist” (TIME), “Laufey’s ascendency to major-league pop artist is one of the most heartening musical phenomena of the last couple of years” (Variety), “Laufey makes music that bridges generations” (Rolling Stone), “A celebration of modern girlhood” (Vanity Fair) – the accolades speak for themselves. Icelandic-Chinese artist, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Laufey is back, and she’s bringing us “Silver Lining,” a mesmerizing new single that heralds a fresh chapter in her already illustrious career. This marks her first original release since her GRAMMY®-winning album “Bewitched” and its expanded edition, “Bewitched: The Goddess Edition,” and it’s a tantalizing taste of what’s to come.
“Silver Lining” isn’t just a song; it’s a declaration. As Laufey explains, “It’s a love song about being able to set your true personality free when you fall in love. Your inner child comes out and you are emboldened by lust. Even if it takes you to hell, at least you’re with your partner.” It’s a raw, honest portrayal of love’s intoxicating power, delivered with Laufey’s signature blend of jazz-infused pop.
The accompanying music video, directed by Jason Lester (who also helmed the visuals for “From the Start” and “Santa Baby”), is a visual feast. Shot on 35mm film, it transports us to a fantastical masquerade ball, filled with vibrant characters and “Rite of Spring”-inspired choreography. But the party quickly descends into a surreal, chaotic hellscape, a testament to the passionate, sometimes destructive, nature of love.
Laufey has captivated a generation by seamlessly merging her love for jazz and classical music with a modern pop sensibility. She acts as a bridge, introducing the timeless sounds of Chet Baker, Carole King, and Ravel to a younger audience, creating a whimsical universe she calls “Laufey Land.”
Her journey is as remarkable as her music. Raised between Reykjavik and Washington, D.C., and a graduate of Berklee College of Music, Laufey has achieved staggering success. From her debut EP, “Typical of Me,” to her GRAMMY®-winning album, “Bewitched,” she’s amassed billions of streams, sold out iconic venues, and collaborated with diverse artists. Yet, her story is far from over.
With “Silver Lining,” Laufey continues to push boundaries, inviting us into a world where classic elegance meets modern vulnerability. This new era promises to be as captivating and transformative as her previous work, solidifying her position as a true visionary in contemporary music.
