My biggest takeaway from 𝑨𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒂 (Directed by Sean Baker; Starring Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yuri Borisov, Karen Karagulian)
Apart from its political play-by-play (yes, it’s a given that oligarchs always feel they have the right to step on us until we are helpless lumps of stones), the film has given me a familiar but somehow meaningful realization—something usually taken for granted.
Life may sometimes go downhill, and for some, it might be a spiral of challenges after another. We experience loss, betrayal, injustice, etc., but at some point, there‘s always a speck of hope—as tiny as it seems—the silver lining we fail to notice. If bad karma has been chasing us, we may also have accumulated some good karma. Like Igor to Anora, we have our allies.
Invest in your relationships (be sure they’re the right ones, though; say no to evil eyes (just for the lack of a better word)) because as life (and the system) continues to sabotage us, at least we have someone to support us in the direst times.
𝑨𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒂 won both the 2025 The Academy Award for Best Picture and the Palme d’Or at the 2024 World Film Festival in Cannes.
