This Star Wars figure has been called the “Holy Grail” of all Star Wars toys. Why? Well, let’s take it way back to the 70s. A Bobba Fett figure was offered as a mail-away premium, not sold in stores. How could the fan get one? Well, it can be yours for four proof-of-purchase seals (cut from any Star Wars 3 ¾” action figure card back). Just mail away your seals, and your figure will arrive. When the figure arrived, you had a Bobba Fett figure with the new design: they had their missiles welded in place, and if they weren’t satisfied with the new design, they could get any other 3 ¾” figure of their choice. Why was the toy redesigned to have the missile welded and not fire?
Some reports that missile-firing Battlestar Galactica toys from competitor Mattel had become choking hazards. So, it was best that Kenner took them out. When your newly designed Bobba Fett figure arrived, the missile had been glued into place with a note to consumers saying: “The launcher has been removed from the product for safety reasons.” It is uncertain exactly how many Rocket Firing Boba Fett’s were created before they went with the new design of the figure. However, it is believed that as many as 100 prototypes were produced, with only two being hand-painted. So, this sold figure is an extremely rare example of the prototype.
This figure is graded an AFA 60 and sold at Heritage Auctions in 2024 for a total of $525,000.
