Set against the backdrop of post-war Korea, where dreams are fueled by determination and ambition, “Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born” tells the story of an ordinary girl with an extraordinary voice striving to become the best performer in the world of Korean female classical opera. Premiering on October 12 on Disney+, this captivating new series is adapted from the beloved webtoon of the same name.

The show follows the journey of Jeongnyeon, a trainee at Maeran Gukgeuk-dan (Theater Company), who competes and grows alongside her fiercest rival, Youngseo. With aspirations to dominate the Korean classical opera scene, Jeongnyeon faces a series of challenges that test her resolve and talent as she takes center stage in a world where the odds are stacked against her.

“Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born” features a stellar cast, with Kim Taeri (Revenant, Twenty Five Twenty One) portraying Jeongnyeon, and Shin Yeeun (The Glory, Revenge of Others) playing Youngseo. The series is penned by Choi Hyobi (A Time Called You, Babysitter) and directed by Jung Jiin (The Red Sleeve, Radiant Office), and is produced by Studio Dragon, a top-tier production company under CJ ENM.

This series is the latest addition to Disney+’s expanding lineup of compelling APAC (Asia-Pacific) stories. In 2024, Disney+ has already released over ten high-quality Korean titles, building on the success of its 2023 APAC content slate that included popular series like Moving, Big Bet, and The Worst of Evil. The platform’s most-watched local original series of 2024, A Shop For Killers, has set a high standard for regional storytelling. Coming up, viewers can look forward to several highly anticipated Korean originals such as The Tyrant, Unmasked, Seoul Busters, Gangnam B-Side, and Light Shop. Looking ahead to 2025, Disney+ will continue to offer premium scripted dramas featuring top-tier talent, including Tempest, Low Life, and Nine Puzzles.
