Bristol’s rock rebels Oswald Slain are charging into the spotlight with their electrifying new single, “Have You Got What You Came Here For?,” released on August 22, 2025, via independent channels. Pulled from their forthcoming debut album BUCKY, set to drop on October 24, 2025, the track is a frenetic burst of scrappy energy and risqué humor, capturing the chaotic spirit of a raucous night in the French Alps. Formerly known as Little Thief, the band—led by co-founders Charlie Fitzgerald and Rhii Williams—channels a raw, retro-rock swagger, blending classic Americana vibes akin to Neil Young and The Band with the gritty edge of their earlier work. Available on Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Music, this single sets the stage for an album that promises to be both introspective and unapologetically bold.

Born in the band’s DIY home studio, “Have You Got What You Came Here For?” is a testament to their unpolished, live-wire approach. Vocalist and lyricist Charlie Fitzgerald recounts its origins: “Rhii and I spent a couple of months playing in the bars around the French Alps as a little rocky two-piece. It was really fun. Everyone was always super drunk, and it was pretty full-on.” Inspired by the après-ski revelry and the resurgence of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder On The Dancefloor” post-Saltburn, Fitzgerald penned the lyrics after a lively night at Morzine’s Cavern bar. In the studio, producer Ryan Rogers laid down infectious basslines, while Rhii Williams’ ferocious drumming pushed the track to the brink, creating a rebellious anthem that’s already a live favorite. “It’s angsty, rebellious, and one of our favorites to play live,” Fitzgerald says, noting its “stupidly long title and pretty risqué lyrics” make it the “terrier” of BUCKY.

The single follows the success of their April 2025 EP, KISS ME ON THE MOUTH, which earned praise from outlets like Asbo Magazine, RTE, Fame Magazine, KUTX, Sirius XM, Rough Trade’s ‘Counter Culture,’ and Apple’s ‘New In Rock.’ Mastered by Jason Mitchell (PJ Harvey, XTC), the track leans into its imperfections, with fuzzy guitars and driving rhythms evoking influences like Weezer and Pixies. This raw authenticity carries over to BUCKY, an eight-track album recorded with a sense of urgency—songs written in the morning and tracked by afternoon using a cheap dynamic mic, embracing a live, unfiltered feel. “We weren’t seeking perfection,” Fitzgerald explains. “It felt good not to be too precious about anything.” Living with producer Ryan Rogers during the process infused the album with enthusiasm, resulting in a record that captures “surrender, growth, and hope within a chaotic and cluttered lifestyle.”

BUCKY marks a pivotal moment for Oswald Slain, reflecting a period of personal and musical evolution. After years of uncertainty, the recording process brought clarity, with Fitzgerald noting, “Making this record was a massive turning point in our lives.” The album builds on the momentum of earlier singles like “Firing Line,” a romantic ode to unwavering support, and “Happiness Is Overrated,” a defiant response to societal pressures, inspired by Bob Dylan’s storytelling. The band’s roots as Little Thief, where they played major UK festivals like Glastonbury and Shambala, inform their dynamic live presence, now rebranded with a fresh sonic identity that blends Americana’s soulful depth with rock’s untamed energy.

Oswald Slain’s journey is one of resilience and reinvention. Co-founders Fitzgerald and Williams, collaborators for over a decade, made the bold choice to rebrand, channeling their experiences into music that’s honest, fun, and vulnerable. With BUCKY, they invite listeners into a world of raw emotion and infectious grooves, supported by a UK tour including stops at Shambala Festival (August 23) and Becider Seaside 21 Festival (August 25). As Oswald Slain prepares to unleash their debut album, “Have You Got What You Came Here For?” signals a band unafraid to embrace the messy, joyful edges of rock, ready to leave their mark.
