In a powerful testament to resilience and cultural pride, Thai refugee artist Star2 has unveiled his transformative EP, Lonely Summer Nightz, a project that amplifies the voices of the Ka-ren refugee community while blending global sounds and stories. Released in 2025, this eight-track collection, available on Spotify, weaves narratives of love, struggle, triumph, and community, spotlighting the creativity of artists from the Mae La and Mae Ra Moe refugee camps in Thailand. Born in the Mae La camp himself, Star2 has made it his mission to uplift Ka-ren artists from the United States, Thailand, and Myanmar, creating a cross-cultural tapestry of music that resonates with raw emotion and universal themes. The EP, featuring the vibrant focus track “Summertime” with an accompanying music video shot by Gebar of Ordinary Visions in Dana Point, California, is a bold step in Star2’s journey to redefine Asian-American hip-hop and pop.
Star2’s story is one of survival and triumph. Born amidst the horrors of genocide perpetrated by the Burmese army in Myanmar, which razed his village, he and his family fled, walking 500 miles through treacherous jungles to reach the Mae La refugee camp in Thailand. Surrounded by barbed wire and home to over 55,000 people, the camp was where Star2 spent his early years until a lottery granted his grandmother and her four children passage to San Diego, California, when he was six. There, he faced poverty, gang violence, and the challenges of adapting to a new world without his parents, raised by his grandmother, whom he considers his true mother. Music became his solace, inspired by artists like Justin Bieber, Tyga, and Chris Brown, as well as his uncle’s guitar playing at Karen cultural events. Star2 began freestyling as a teen in a makeshift studio in a friend’s apartment, blending English and Ka-ren lyrics, and posting early music videos to YouTube, which caught the attention of the Karen community through platforms like Karen1TV.
Lonely Summer Nightz is a collaborative triumph, featuring a stellar lineup of Ka-ren artists and US R&B star Luh Kel. The EP includes tracks like “Here We Go,” featuring Ler Mu Dex and Luh Kel, a slow-burning anthem of toxic love that fuses pop, R&B, and hip-hop, with Thai verses adding cross-cultural depth. “By My Side,” with Ler Mu Dex, is a heartfelt ode to loyalty, its music video filmed in Thailand radiating nostalgia and cultural pride. The focus track, “Summertime,” captures the breezy yet poignant vibe of the EP, its visuals set against the sun-drenched beaches of Dana Point. Other tracks, including “12AM,” “One Day,” “Can’t Forget,” “Miss You Much” (featuring Young Henny), and “There 4 U” (featuring Eh La), explore themes of longing, heartbreak, and resilience. Ler Mu Dex, born in the Mae Ra Moe camp and returning there in 2025 after 15 years to reunite with his brother, brings gritty authenticity to the project. Eh La, another Mae La native, and Young Henny, from Thailand’s NuPoe camp, add their unique voices, creating a rich mosaic of Ka-ren experiences.
Star2’s collaborations extend beyond this EP, with past work alongside rap heavyweights like Soulja Boy, $tupid Young, Mozzy, MBNel, Lil Poppa, HoodTrophy Bino, YSN Flow, and MarMar Oso, mentored by Grammy-winning producer Chico Bennett, known for working with Lady Gaga and Usher. His 2022 single “New Me,” featuring Soulja Boy and Luh Kel, celebrated his rags-to-riches journey, with its video showcasing a lavish pool party in a Tarzana mansion. Tracks like “Thinkin Bout You” (1 million YouTube views) and “Run Away” (5 million views on WorldStar Hip Hop) have fueled his rise, earning him over a million Spotify streams and praise from outlets like Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam, GQ, BET, and Lyrical Lemonade. His “Adventures of Star2” YouTube series offers fans a glimpse into his life, from studio sessions to jet-skiing and Alaskan backpacking, showcasing his playful, charismatic side.
In 2025, Star2 and Ler Mu Dex returned to the Mae La and Mae Ra Moe camps, delivering food, treats, and joy to children still living in the difficult conditions they once endured. This act of giving back underscores Star2’s mission to uplift his community, working with nonprofits like The Border Consortium and Karen Outreach to raise awareness for the refugee crisis. His music, often blending traditional Karen instruments like the harp and buffalo horn with modern guitar, piano, and drums, reflects his heritage, heard in cultural celebrations and church events. Tracks like “I Wanna Get F’d Up” with Luh Kel explore heartbreak, while “Run Away” addresses global issues like the Black Lives Matter movement and refugee struggles, its video featuring powerful imagery of worldwide atrocities.
With Lonely Summer Nightz, Star2 not only showcases his genre-bending blend of R&B, hip-hop, and pop but also elevates the voices of Ka-ren artists like Ler Mu Dex, Eh La, and Young Henny. His social media presence—@Star2Official on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, and @ItsStar2 on Facebook—connects him with a loyal fanbase across the US, Thailand, and the UK. The EP’s “Summertime” video, available on YouTube, captures the essence of his journey, blending beachside vibes with emotional depth. Star2’s story, from a Thai refugee camp to San Diego’s stages, is a powerful narrative of resilience, and Lonely Summer Nightz is a vibrant celebration of that legacy, proving music’s ability to bridge cultures and inspire hope.
