Rachael Yamagata proudly announces her first new studio album in nearly a decade, Starlit Alchemy, arriving October 3rd via Jullian Records.
A fiercely independent artist with a profoundly recognizable voice and unflinching emotional depth, Rachael Yamagata first captivated audiences with her critically hailed debut Happenstance. Over two decades, she has cultivated a devoted global following through her raw, cinematic songcraft and soul-baring live performances, releasing a series of cherished albums including Elephants…Teeth Sinking Into Heart, Chesapeake, and Tightrope Walker. Renowned for pairing bruising vulnerability with wry humor and unabashed grit, she has collaborated with a diverse array of artists from Liz Phair and Toots and The Maytals to Ray LaMontagne and Bright Eyes, all while steadfastly forging her own path entirely outside the major label system.
Now, she returns with her most intuitive and intentional work to date. Starlit Alchemy is not a mere collection of singles but a “deep dive record,” as Yamagata describes it—a complete body of work designed to be experienced in its entirety. “I always knew it was going to be a one-song-flows-into-the-next album,” she reveals. “The songs began as a pure compulsion to express what I was witnessing and enduring; the cohesive story revealed itself later. It became a map drawn after the journey, not before. But the entire truth is captured within.”
The album’s lead single, “Birds,” is available now. The track has been described as “a grief-soaked yet strangely buoyant meditation on signs, memory, and the metaphysical.” Inspired by the sudden, haunting phenomenon of birds crashing against her window and written for a cousin grieving the long-ago loss of his mother, it’s a disguised message song—lyrically delicate, emotionally direct, and intricately threaded with hope. “I was struck by the profound loneliness that persists after a loss, the feeling of navigating this chaotic world without someone. For me, the veil between this world and the next is thin. This song is a reminder to watch for signs from those who have passed—especially now, when the world has gone crazy.”
The album’s narrative—one of profound personal loss and universal rediscovery—coalesced gradually over years of personal restructuring and creative risk. “It began as a stream-of-consciousness project; the first demos were conceived as a mini movie soundtrack, with songs played consecutively and linked by thematic interludes.” Though its themes traverse heavy emotional terrain, the listening experience is ultimately transcendent. Starlit Alchemy is not about bypassing pain, but about evolving through it. “It’s a forensic examination of both trauma and beauty, and the bittersweet nature of their coexistence. Fear, loss, and grief are major throughlines, but the magic occurs when you immerse yourself fully in the experience—that’s where the alchemy begins. True strength forms in the surrender; what you once were is shed.” As for its sonic palette, Yamagata offers only a whimsical hint: “Perhaps imagine Tom Waits as Willy Wonka and Rickie Lee Jones as Dorothy, in a soundscape mentored by Hans Zimmer and Joni Mitchell—from her Both Sides Now era. None of which I’m an expert on, by the way, so forgive any pretense.”
