Netflix is expanding its record-breaking Squid Game universe with major announcements today: Squid Game: The Challenge Season 2 will premiere November 4, 2025, while the reality competition series has already been renewed for Season 3.
The streaming giant unveiled a new teaser for Season 2 (watch below) confirming an entirely fresh cast of 456 contestants competing for the $4.56 million prize – the largest cash prize in reality TV history. This season promises new games with unexpected twists, though Netflix remains tight-lipped about whether any challenges from the original drama’s Season 2 will be incorporated.
The renewal comes as no surprise given the franchise’s unprecedented success. The original Squid Game drama remains Netflix’s #1 series of all time, with Season 1 amassing 265.2 million views in its first 91 days. Its reality spinoff proved equally formidable – Season 1 debuted with 20.1 million views and spent five weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 after its November 2023 premiere.
“‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ has become a cultural phenomenon in its own right,” said a Netflix spokesperson. “With the original series concluding its story, we’re thrilled to continue expanding this universe through innovative competition formats.”
Produced by Studio Lambert and ITV Studios’ The Garden, the series has drawn both acclaim and controversy for its high-stakes gameplay mirroring the drama’s life-or-death tension (minus the actual fatalities). Season 2’s teaser hints at even more elaborate sets and psychological mind games.
The announcement strategically coincides with the original drama’s final season maintaining strong numbers – 106.3 million views in its first 10 days, already ranking as Netflix’s #3 most popular non-English series ever.
Casting for Season 3 begins this fall, with Netflix expected to again receive millions of global applicants. Industry analysts note the renewal signals Netflix’s commitment to franchise-building, with rumors persisting about potential scripted spinoffs.
