FX is nearing a pilot order for “Very Young Frankenstein,” a project inspired by Mel Brooks’ 1974 comedy classic “Young Frankenstein,” Variety confirms.
Plot details remain under wraps. Brooks will executive produce alongside producing partner Kevin Salter. Stefani Robinson (writer/showrunner), Taika Waititi (director), and Garrett Basch — all alumni of FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows” — will also executive produce. Michael Gruskoff, producer of the original film, joins as EP. 20th Television is the studio.
Reps for FX and 20th TV declined to comment.
The original film, frequently ranked among the greatest comedies ever made, follows Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) who inherits his grandfather’s Transylvanian castle and resumes experiments to reanimate the dead. Wilder co-wrote the screenplay with Brooks. The cast featured Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Peter Boyle, and Madeline Kahn. Brooks later adapted it into a stage musical, as he did with “The Producers.”
If greenlit, this marks Brooks’ latest TV project following Hulu’s 2023 sequel series “History of the World, Part II,” based on his 1981 film.
Deadline first reported the development.
