Bente Productions makes its cinematic debut with “I Remember You,” a moving story of second chances set against the breathtaking scenery of Boracay. Directed by visual artist and author Boboy Yonzon in his first feature film, the movie follows Gani (JC Santos), a dedicated bank employee assigned to revive a struggling microfinance branch on the island.

For Gani, the assignment brings back painful memories. Years earlier, his engagement to Debbie (Valeen Montenegro) ended tragically when his career ambitions left her feeling neglected. As he immerses himself in helping local entrepreneurs stay afloat, he finds unexpected comfort in Isay (Sarah Panguiton), a strong-willed single mother. Just as their connection deepens, Debbie unexpectedly returns to Boracay, forcing Gani to confront his past while deciding what future he truly wants.

Yonzon crafted the film to authentically portray both personal and financial struggles, partnering with Bente Productions – part of microfinance leader CARD MRI – to highlight the real challenges faced by small business owners. “First of all, Bente Productions, Inc. was formed specifically to tell the stories of the disadvantaged sectors,” Yonzon explains. “We believe that, through entertainment, we could inform.” The director drew inspiration from actual events in Boracay involving a bank and the community it serves.

The casting process was deliberate, with Yonzon seeking actors who could embody complex emotions. “We wanted for the leading role, somebody whose celebrity does not steal away the authenticity of the character,” Yonzon shares. He describes looking for someone who could appear “amidst a great party, but feeling sad” – qualities he found in JC Santos. For the role of Debbie, Yonzon sought “somebody who instantly looked aristocratic, lovely” but with hidden warmth, perfectly embodied by Valeen Montenegro.

Santos, known for his powerful performances in films like “Family Matters” and “100 Tula Para Kay Stella,” connects deeply with Gani’s character. “I am always drawn to heroic characters,” Santos says. “Characters who you can trust to save the day for those who are in need.” Meanwhile Montenegro, typically seen in comedic roles like her breakout performance in “Bubble Gang’s” Balitang Ina sketch, showcases her dramatic range as Debbie. “What drew me to Debby is how real she is,” Montenegro reflects. “She’s strong but soft, confident but still searching.”

Beyond the central love story, “I Remember You” thoughtfully explores how financial struggles intersect with matters of the heart. “It’s not just about love,” Montenegro emphasizes. “It’s about healing, timing, second chances, and even the real-life struggles we don’t always talk about, like financial decisions and sacrifices.” Santos hopes the film will inspire audiences to support their communities during difficult times.

Yonzon sees the film as an opportunity to connect with viewers facing life’s challenges. “It is important to deal with struggles in a world that appear to be more complicated each year,” the director says. “We need to understand them and, if it is within your power, help ease the struggles.”

“I Remember You” arrives in cinemas nationwide on July 9, 2025. Set against Boracay’s stunning landscapes, the film offers a poignant reminder that second chances – in love, in life, and in community – are always possible for those brave enough to take them.
