Netflix Philippines is set to release its first-ever zombie film, Outside, directed by award-winning filmmaker Carlo Ledesma. The movie, which promises a suspenseful blend of psychological horror and thrilling action, will debut globally on October 17, 2024. The official trailer has just been unveiled, offering a glimpse into the tense and haunting world of the film.
A Harrowing Tale of Survival
Outside revolves around Francis (played by Sid Lucero), an unsteady patriarch, who retreats to his remote family farmhouse in the countryside with his wife Iris (Beauty Gonzales) and their two young sons, Josh (Marco Masa) and Lucas (Aiden Tyler Patdu), in an attempt to escape a deadly zombie outbreak that has overtaken the country. What initially seems like a safe haven soon reveals deeper psychological strains as Francis’s growing paranoia threatens the fragile peace.
The trailer opens with a chilling image—a dilapidated car smeared with a bloody handprint, a symbol of the family’s horrific journey to survival. As scenes unfold, viewers are introduced to a quiet yet eerie provincial farmhouse, where the family desperately tries to settle into a new normal amidst the chaos. However, cracks begin to show, particularly in Francis’s increasingly erratic behavior, casting a shadow over the family’s chances of survival. The tension escalates as the audience is led into the film’s deeper focus: the psychological toll of a family facing not only the undead but also their own fears and unraveling emotions.
More Than Just a Zombie Film
At the Netflix APAC Southeast Asia Showcase in June 2024, director Carlo Ledesma explained that Outside is far more than a standard zombie apocalypse film. “At its heart, it’s a terrifying psychological thriller about family survival during a zombie pandemic,” he shared. He emphasized that the film delves into the personal dynamics and struggles within the family unit, elevating the genre into something more emotionally charged and intimate.

Carlo Ledesma is no stranger to horror. He gained recognition in 2011 with his critically acclaimed found-footage horror film The Tunnel, followed by Sunod in 2019 and the horror-comedy short The Kapre. Ledesma’s work often explores dark, eerie themes, and he describes Outside as his most personal project to date. Drawing inspiration from his childhood in Negros and his own sense of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, Outside captures the fear and helplessness that many experienced during the global crisis.
The Cast and Special Participation
The film features a stellar cast led by Sid Lucero and Beauty Gonzales, alongside young actors Marco Masa and Aiden Tyler Patdu. Special appearances from notable actors such as Enchong Dee and Joel Torre add to the film’s depth and intensity. With these accomplished actors bringing the story to life, Outside promises a gripping, high-stakes drama that blends both horror and human vulnerability.
