Calcou, a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer, unveiled the colorful video for his current track, “Below,” which was released on April 22nd. The song is the third from his upcoming EP, Places, which will be released on May 20th through MfDR+C. Brian Sanhaji (Charlotte De Witte and Pan Pot) mastered the single, which has received support from CLASH Magazine, Son Of Marketing, Indie Shuffle, Stereofox, and House Music With Love, as well as Spotify’s Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds Dance playlists.
Calcou has worked as a producer for a number of well-known companies, including Universal Music, Majestic Casual, L’Oréal, and Ferrero, to mention a few. His debut single, ‘Lfost,’ was selected by the Berlin music commission to symbolize Berlin’s infamous sound, and was afterward picked up by the Spotify editorial team, while his subsequent releases consistently ascend to the top of Hype Machine.
Mahir Duman, a visual artist, explains how the video for ‘Below’ was made: “I have created the video by using artificial intelligence. We discussed a lot in advance how the video could reflect Calcou’s approach to composing and sound selection, leaving room for the unexpected and random. So I chose to use pre-trained StyleGAN2, but left them purposefully undertrained to be as abstract as possible. When the AI was finished, I took back control and fine-tuned everything, using five different types of videos and mixing, recoloring, and reforming them. During the process, I felt like being in a deep ocean, figuring out forms and colors and merging them into something new. It was a very creative process and I’m happy to see that we’ve facilitated the creation of multiple forms of expressions in one pot.”
As each tune is joyously highlighted in the visualizer, the colorful tapestries become entwined with the rolling rhythmic patterns. The video, which is kaleidoscopic in its twists and turns, manages to offer the right backdrop to the song as the downtempo beats settle in.
Calcou is a classically trained composer currently located in Berlin, Germany, who proudly displays his creative history as a jazz pianist, identifying his music as a realm where jazz meets Chill and Deep House melts into Electronica. When it comes to music, the artist is inspired by Kiasmos, Bonobo, Christian Löffler, Caribou, and Dj Koze, while his most recent album brings to mind Fejká, Janus Rasmussen, and Rohne.
